Student Motivation and Achievement Programmes

The Ormiston Education Trust provides resources and training related to motivational programmes that impact positively on pupil/student behaviour and achievement. The successful Social Growth Programme focuses upon the needs of six year olds and is designed to support the development of a positive self image. Evaluations show improvement in both the behaviour and attitudes of pupils with an associated impact on learning. The programme can be used on a whole class or targeted group basis over a period of ten weeks. Added value is provided when a Health Visitor/School Nurse is a part of the team.

The 'You Can Do It!' Education Programme is a fully integrated programme that progressively builds the skills, values and attitudes associated with pupil/student achievement from the Early Years to Post 16. There are additional resources for both young adults with a particular focus on the NEET's Group and for adult learners used as a strategy to support a return to learning approach. All elements of the programme have appropriate materials and are supported by training. The core programme is based upon the training of a lead teacher(s) who, with support, then train colleagues in a school based programme.

The programme fits well into PSHE programmes and can be delivered in tutorial groups.

For schools seeking to engage parents to support their children's learning there is the Investing in Parents Programme that is designed to build parental capability to support their child's learning with specific advice, for example, on 'what to do if your child is underachieving'.

There are additional materials and training programmes, which develop the mentoring skills of teachers and learning mentors. This programme was a key element within the DfES Pilot Mentoring Programme, which received a very positive evaluation from the University of Warwick
