The background
To support a new academy with its raising achievement strategy, particularly in mathematics.

The challenge
Barnfield West Academy wanted to raise its levels of achievement across the board, and Ormiston Education was called in to help with mathematics.

The solution
Ormiston Education provided a highly experienced consultant to spearhead Barnfield West Academy’s improvement plan in mathematics. The Orimiston Education team evaluated the department to Ofsted standards, then managed its turnaround with a bold and highly effective plan. A focus on quality improvement and resourcing provided innovative solutions to overcome the school’s shortage of mathematics specialists, which included using joint lesson planning focussing on effective use of assessment data, peer observation and maximising use of the best resources.

The results
In two and a half terms, Barnfield West Academy raised its five A*-C GCSE percentage from 46 per cent to 93 per cent (16 per cent to 48 per cent if mathematics and English are included). The school attributes much of its success in mathematics to the support it received from Ormiston Education.
