You Choose Bronze Award: Beth Hughes

The background
To give a disengaged learner the chance to get accredited qualifications in a way that suited her learning style and needs.

The challenge
Fourteen-year-old Beth Hughes was struggling at school. She has dyslexia and wasn’t engaging with conventional education and teaching methods, so her parents decided to home-educate her.

The solution
The You Choose programme gave Beth a way to learn in the way that suits her best: by actually ‘doing’. She enjoys art, so as part of her You Choose Bronze Award, Beth worked on her fairy illustrations. The online learning platform helped to tackle the challenges Beth experienced in face-to-face learning.

The results
Beth completed the You Choose Bronze Award in September 2010. The team at Ormiston Education liked Beth’s illustrations so much, we commissioned one especially for our Christmas cards, sending them to hundreds of schools and businesses. Beth is now working on the You Choose Wider Key Skills programme, which will give her a recognised qualification and help her to fulfil her ambition of attending art college. She has also undertaken a You Choose Enterprise qualification, which will help her develop her entrepreneurial skills in order to sell her cards. Beth recently won the Malvern in Bloom and Britain in Bloom art competitions.
